1937 Gibson J-35 guitar FON 377C-9. A majestic sounding Jumbo bodied Gibson guitar from the pre-WWII factory in Kalamazoo, MI. Original and period correct. This was Tony Williamson’s personal guitar since he purchased it from the original owner almost 20 years ago. Features included silky spruce top with X-braces and three tone-bars, original small maple bridge plate; mahogany neck and back; ivoroid bound top and back; silk-screened “Gibson” script logo on peg head; “fire stripe” celluloid pickguard; ivory nut; rosewood bridge and fingerboard; ivory saddle. Interestingly, the sides of this guitar seem to us to be an unusually fine grade of wood, and even though factory specs designate mahogany, this wood strikingly resembles rosewood to us. Is it possible Gibson may have used rosewood sides on a J35? One might note that the guitars from the very next batch, FON 388, were Advanced Jumbos. They were undoubtedly bending rosewood for sides at the time this guitar was made. We are not at all certain of this, but if it were true, then perhaps that accounts for the unusual richness coloring the crispness of the mahogany sound. This guitar has seen much use and shows lots of finish crazing. The vigorous pick strokes of the original owner have worn away the finish in two patches around the pick guard. We guarantee the structurally integrity however, and an amazing sound. Probably because of its constant use, it is a great example of the sound of the best of these Gibson Jumbos from the mid to late ‘30s. Great power and projection; crisp and dry, yet still rosewood-rich! Really nice bass notes, great sustain, clear and clean on the treble. What a great guitar looking for a good home! A more modern hardshell case and original soft case are included. Free UPS shipping in continental US; we share shipping costs with customers in selected overseas destinations. $12,500 firm.
