Gibson F5 #72211, the “Tiger Loar”

Gibson mandolin style F-5—the “Tiger Loar,” serial number 72211, signed on Feb 26, 1923, by Lloyd Loar, acoustical engineer for the Gibson Mandolin and Guitar Co. of Kalamazoo, Michigan. In our opinion, there has never been a more beautiful, great sounding Loar-signed mandolin, and in many ways, this instrument represents the full culmination of the original vision of the F-5.

The original owner was mandolin teacher, performer and orchestra leader Roy Balser Veiock, proprietor of Veiock Music in New Brighton, Pennsylvania.  At the time of Mr. Veiock’s untimely death in an automobile accident in 1928, the mandolin went into storage where it remained until it appeared at an international auction in October of 2004.  The appearance of such an exquisite instrument in such extraordinary condition was celebrated throughout the mandolin community, and the sale price set a market high. Once again, this mandolin is being offered for sale, complete with original case, memorabilia (including Mr. Veiock’s business card and a period photo of the store) and details of provenance.

We are also offering current photos, including the inscription by Lloyd Loar on the underside of the soundboard, “shape this brace to this” (for more in-depth information, see our blog, “Breaking News 1923).  As the photos show, this mandolin is in extremely fine original condition, with all parts intact, never having needed repair. The signature and serial number labels are in pristine condition, original, intact and unaltered in any way.  Features and appointments on Gibson F-5 72211 are consistent with factory specifications for this model and year and include the classic carved top and parallel tone bar braced Adirondack spruce top, constructed with f-holes: one-piece curly hard maple neck (which places the bridge in the center of the f-holes); extraordinary tiger-striped sugar maple back; headstock inlay consisting of “The Gibson” and abalone flowerpot; pearl button tuners with notched endplate; hand-engraved tailpiece; pick guard following body points; all hardware silver plated; and the fully realized “Gibson Cremona” shaded-sunburst varnish finish.  The original Geib and Shaeffer case is included, also in excellent condition.  Gibson F-5 #72211 has remarkable focus, volume and response, full and rich, a stunning presence.  Please inquire for additional information, photographs and terms of sale.
