1938 top-of-the-line mandolin in extraordinary condition!
Gibson F-5 95334 FON 801D-2
Originally shipped on November 23, 1938, to Canada (“made in USA” stamp on back of peghead), this incredibly well-preserved top-of-the-line mandolin is now looking for a new home. All original, excellent condition, and quite amazing in sound and playability. By 1938, Gibson had made a few changes in the F5 model, primarily in appointments: “Gibson” and flower-pot in the peghead, block inlay beginning at first fret, nitrocellulose top coat and round-end gold-plated tuners with tuner shaft above the round gear. Otherwise, this instrument adheres to specifications designed by Lloyd Loar in 1922 which include carved spruce top and maple back; maple sides and neck, ebony bridge positioned in center of f-holes, truss rod, pearl tuner buttons, fingerboard extension allowing for 29 frets and gorgeous sunburst color. Gibson F-5 #95334 was shipped to Canada just a few days after the much more famous F-5 95115 was shipped to Alonze Workman in Fremont Furnace, Pennsylvania on November 15, 1938. You may not have heard of Mr. Workman, but I daresay you have heard F5 95115 played in the hands of the great Sam Bush. Yes, 95334 and Sam’s “Ol’ Hoss” were on the same workbench at Gibson at the same time! Please call or email for pricing and terms.
