2022 Randy Wood A-5 mandolin, serial number 3322

2022 Randy Wood 2-point A-5 #3322. For well over 50 years the name Randy Wood is synonymous with the highest quality in mandolin and guitar building. Still at work near Savannah, Georgia, his shop is a frequent stop-off for some of the world’s greatest performers and a bucket list for anyone who might want to soak up some of Randy’s unlimited knowledge of stringed instruments. Randy’s A-5 mandolin is a great example of his genius and his ability to extract the best tone from the exquisite woods that he uses, while still maintaining a gorgeous and unique aesthetic. Inspired in part by the dimensions, color and varnish finish of the elegant Lyon and Healy Style A Professional, the sonic design—f-holes, tone bars and tap tuning—hearken to the rarest, most iconic & legendary mandolin in existence, the Gibson A-5 designed by Lloyd Loar for Margie Griffith in 1923. Like its antecedents, this mandolin is equally at home in the hands of jazz, Blue Grass, old-time and classical players. In short, this mandolin has THE sound.
Features include silky-grained Red Spruce top with f-holes and tone bars: hard maple back with exciting flame swirls; equally figured maple sides and neck; white/black/white body binding; white binding on neck and peghead; RW logo and fleur-de-lis in peghead; Hand engraved James tailpiece; Golden Age tuners with black buttons; Randy Wood’s Loar reproduction bridge; nickel plated hardware; Randy’s special-formula finish. The neck is patterned after the Griffith A-5 (with 1 1/16 nut width) except fingerboard has a compound radius, scalloped extension and medium frets. Sound is very strong, plenty of volume and that classic Randy Wood “woody” chop. Although pre-owned, this mandolin is in showroom condition and is set up for easy play and adjustability to suit individual needs and tastes. We will include a new Crossrock case, free UPS ground shipping (east of Mississippi) and a 48-hour approval period, all for a total of $5250.
