What a find! a ‘49 SJ in remarkable original condition!

1949 Gibson Southerner Jumbo 3213-28

Ca. 1949 Gibson Southerner Jumbo (SJ)  guitar 3213 28.  A majestic sounding Jumbo-bodied Gibson guitar, in excellent original condition. This beautifully preserved, almost unplayed guitar is a prime example of a style of instrument much revered by many classic artists since its inception in 1942. This one is crack-free with original finish entirely intact, with only very, very minor scuffs keeping it from the “extremely fine” category.  Features include Sitka spruce top; fine-grained mahogany neck and back; 7-ply binding on top and back; single bound neck; modern “Gibson” scroll transfer on peghead; small tortoise-colored celluloid pickguard; bone nut; forward-pointed belly rosewood bridge; rosewood fingerboard with pearloid parallelogram inlaid position markers; tapered peghead; individual closed-back two-tab Kluson tuners; Gibson sunburst top and mahogany colored back with the black stripe down the center line. Fingerboard width in inches:  1 11/16 at nut; 2 1/16 at 12 fret. Neck thickness is 7/8 inch at 1st fret.   Inside, the guitar is as new with X-bracing crossing 1 inch back from the sound hole; original small maple bridge plate: two tone bars; and all braces scalloped: now we understand why it sounds so amazing!   All in all, Gibson SJ 3213-28 is in remarkable condition with only finish crazing to show its age.  The only apparent changes from original is the addition of a strap button in the heel of the neck.  It has never had a neck set, and even appears to have factory original frets showing very little wear. Quite simply, it is today almost exactly like it was when it left the factory nearly 75 years ago. If the action is not suitable for the next owner, we will let that person address it.  As it plays right now, Hank Williams would have had no problem getting “Hey Good Looking” out to every seat in the Opry house. This is also the style of guitar that Earl Scruggs used on the gospel cuts on those classic Flatt and Scruggs albums on Mercury. And as if that is not enough, this is the sound used in the recording studio by the Everly Brothers for “Wake Up Little Susie” and “Bye Bye Love!”  Albert Lee described it best when he said “The Southern Jumbos have a wonderful woody, percussive sound, one that’s almost boxy in the best sense of the word.”   This is a great guitar looking for a good home and will be shipped in a modern TKL hardshell case.  Free UPS shipping in continental US east of Mississippi and we share shipping costs with customers in western US and selected overseas destinations. For this pristine 1949 classic SJ, we are asking  $10,500.

Hank Williams, Circa 1950. Looking good with his Gibson Southerner Jumbo!
